Make a few days of it – a McLaren Vale food and wine itinerary

With eight restaurants across McLaren Vale and surrounds now recognised by the MICHELIN Guide, there’s plenty of inspiration for planning a few days around some memorable meals.

A little planning tip: If there’s a restaurant you’re particularly keen to visit, it’s worth booking ahead, especially for weekend dining and winery lunches. Opening days vary, so check directly with each restaurant before planning your itinerary.

Here’s one way to enjoy a two or three-night food and wine getaway, with time for everything else McLaren Vale has to offer.

Day 1 – Arrive in McLaren Vale and settle in

Why not start your getaway with a long lunch? Arrive in McLaren Vale around lunchtime and begin with a booking at one of the region’s wonderful winery restaurants.

After lunch, perhaps visit another cellar door or two before checking into Vale 194 from 2 pm. Take some time to settle in, unpack and enjoy the afternoon at your own pace.

In the evening, you can leave the car behind and walk into the McLaren Vale township for dinner, or simply relax at your accommodation with a few local wines and something easy to eat.

Day 2 – Local produce, cellar doors and the coast

If your stay includes a Saturday, start the morning at the Willunga Farmers Market. Pick up some fresh local produce, cheeses and other goodies to enjoy during your stay or take home with you.

Then head out for another long lunch, perhaps trying one of the MICHELIN-recognised restaurants on your list, with a few cellar door visits along the way.

Later in the afternoon, take a drive to nearby Port Willunga or Aldinga Beach for a walk along the coast before returning to McLaren Vale. You can even drive your car onto the beach at Aldinga, Silver Sands, or Sellicks Beach.

If you’d rather start the day with a beach walk, simply reverse the plan and enjoy your lunch and winery visits afterwards.

Day 3 – One more taste of McLaren Vale

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at one of the cafe’s in town and perhaps a morning walk along the Shiraz Trail before checking out.

There’s no need to head straight home. You could book one more lunch, revisit a favourite cellar door or discover somewhere you didn’t quite have time for earlier in your stay.

And if you’re staying a little longer, there’s plenty more to explore across the McLaren Vale Wine Region and Fleurieu Peninsula.

Stay in the heart of McLaren Vale

Make Vale 194 your base for exploring McLaren Vale’s food and wine scene.

Located in the middle of the McLaren Vale township, Vale 194 offers five luxury self-contained holiday houses, each with three full king bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a private outdoor area.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends or organising a larger food and wine getaway, you can enjoy the flexibility of your own accommodation while staying close to the region’s restaurants, cellar doors and local attractions.

With 15 king bedrooms and accommodation for up to 30 guests across five houses, Vale 194 is also an option for groups wanting to explore McLaren Vale together. Each house sleeps up to six guests, with the king beds designed for sharing rather than splitting into singles.
