Group Accommodation in McLaren Vale: A Checklist for Planning Your Stay

Last updated: 15 June 2026

Planning a group getaway sounds simple until you start trying to find accommodation that works for everyone.

Whether you’re organising a milestone birthday, family reunion, wedding weekend, girls’ trip, golf weekend or simply gathering friends for a few days of good food and wine, there are a few questions worth asking before you book.

How many actual bedrooms are there? Will couples have proper beds? Can everyone spend time together while still having their own space? How far apart will you be? Can you walk anywhere? And who is going to work out what everyone does once you arrive?

Vale 194 was purpose-built with groups in mind. Our five self-contained three-bedroom houses are located together in one private, gated complex in the heart of McLaren Vale, giving groups the opportunity to stay together while still having their own space.

If you’re looking for group accommodation in McLaren Vale, here is our checklist for making the stay work.

How Vale 194 Makes Group Stays Easier

Planning for a group can involve a lot of moving parts. We try to make the accommodation and trip-planning side a little simpler.

✓ Stay together in one location – five self-contained houses within one private, gated property.

✓ Book for the size of your group – choose the number of houses you need, subject to availability.

✓ Give everyone a proper bedroom – 15 private bedrooms, all with king beds, for groups of up to 30 guests.

✓ Enjoy time together and your own space – catch up over breakfast or drinks, head out together for long lunches, dinners and experiences, then return to the privacy of your own house.

✓ Self-cater when it suits you – every house has a full kitchen, dining and living areas, laundry and undercover barbecue.

✓ Stay centrally – walk to Main Road cafés, restaurants and nearby cellar doors, with easy access to the Shiraz Trail.

✓ Make group dining decisions easier – use our Where to Eat in McLaren Vale guide to explore a wide range of local dining options. Images and links to menus help you compare venues, food styles and settings before deciding what suits your group.

✓ Find special experiences for your group – our Ultimate McLaren Vale Experience Guide brings together tastings, tours and memorable regional experiences, making it easier to discover something special to do together.

✓ Share the information once you’ve booked – guests receive access to our online guidebook, which can be shared with the group. It includes practical information about Vale 194, arrival and stay details, local recommendations and useful information for exploring the region, so the organiser doesn’t have to answer every question.

✓ Ask us for ideas – if you’re still not sure where to start, we’re happy to point you towards ideas and current local information that may suit your group.

Every group is different, so before choosing where to stay, it is worth thinking through a few practical questions.

1. How Many People Can the Accommodation Actually Sleep?

This is the first question to ask, but look beyond the headline number.

Check how many bedrooms there are, what type of beds are provided and whether the advertised capacity relies on sofa beds, bunks or shared sleeping spaces.

At Vale 194, each of our five houses has three private bedrooms, each with a king bed. Across the full property, groups can book up to 15 king bedrooms for a maximum of 30 guests.

That means a group can stay together in one location without everyone having to share one large house.

Depending on the size of your group, you can book the number of houses you need.

2. Can We Stay Together Without Sharing Everything?

For many groups, this is the real question.

A group holiday is about spending time together, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone wants to share one kitchen, one living room and one bathroom for the entire weekend.

Vale 194’s layout offers a different way to travel as a group. Friends and family can stay together within the same secure property, catch up over breakfast or drinks in smaller groups, head out together for long lunches, dinners and experiences around McLaren Vale, then return to the privacy of their own house at the end of the day.

Each house has its own kitchen, dining and living areas, laundry, two bathrooms and private outdoor space. For larger groups, the region’s restaurants, wineries and experiences become the natural gathering places, while Vale 194 gives everyone a comfortable place to stay close together without having to share every part of the weekend.

It works particularly well for extended families, groups of couples and wedding guests who want to be close to each other while still having some independence.

3. Does Everyone Get a Proper Bedroom?

This can make a big difference to a group getaway, particularly when several couples are travelling together.

All 15 bedrooms at Vale 194 have full king beds with quality Sealy Posturepedic hotel mattresses, made here in South Australia. Our king beds are not split kings pushed together, so there is no join or gap down the middle of the bed.

There are also no sofa beds or fold-out beds included in the standard guest capacity. When we say Vale 194 accommodates up to 30 guests, that means 30 people sleeping in 15 private king bedrooms.

Each house has one bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with a further two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs.

For groups, this makes room allocation much simpler and helps avoid the familiar discussion about who ends up on a fold-out bed or with the room nobody wants.

4. Is There Enough Space to Spend Time Together?

Before booking group accommodation, think about how your group actually plans to spend the weekend.

Are you going out for every meal? Will you want a slow breakfast together? Are you planning to bring back local produce after a day exploring? Will different parts of the group want to do different things?

Each Vale 194 house has a full kitchen, dining area, lounge and undercover barbecue area, giving guests the flexibility to self-cater when they choose.

For larger groups booking multiple houses, guests can gather in smaller groups for breakfast, coffee or an evening drink before heading out together for the day.

Self-contained accommodation can also be particularly useful on a food and wine trip. Not every meal needs to be a restaurant booking. Sometimes, after a long winery lunch, local cheese, fresh bread and a bottle discovered during the day are all you need for the evening.

5. Is the Location Practical for a Group?

Location becomes even more important when you’re coordinating multiple people.

A property may look beautiful, but if every coffee, dinner booking and activity requires organising cars and drivers, group logistics can quickly become complicated.

Vale 194 is located on Main Road in the McLaren Vale township. Guests can walk to cafés, restaurants, wine bars and nearby cellar doors, with the Shiraz Trail close by for walking and cycling.

The central location also makes it easy to explore further afield. McLaren Vale’s cellar doors and restaurants are within easy reach, while the beaches and coastal townships of the Fleurieu Peninsula are a short drive away.

For groups with different interests, this flexibility can be particularly valuable. Not everyone has to do exactly the same thing all day.

6. Is There Enough Parking and How Will We Get Around?

It’s a small detail until a group arrives in several cars.

Most Vale 194 houses can accommodate two small to medium vehicles, with one parked under the carport and another behind. House 2 generally accommodates one vehicle because of the hanging chair in the outdoor area.

If members of your group are travelling in electric vehicles, EV charging is available for guests staying in Houses 3 and 4. Guests need to bring their own Type 2 charging cable.

For a food and wine weekend, however, one of the easiest options is to leave the cars behind and book a local tour or transport provider. We have a list of local operators we can share to help you find an option that suits your group.

Then everyone can enjoy the tastings, nobody has to be the designated driver, and the journey between cellar doors becomes part of the day together.

7. How Will We Plan What Everyone Does?

Finding accommodation for a group is one job. Choosing restaurants, comparing menus, deciding which cellar doors can comfortably accommodate your group and answering everyone’s questions can quickly become another.

We try to make the planning easier from the beginning.

Our Where to Eat in McLaren Vale guide is available to anyone planning a visit and brings together a wide range of local dining options. With images and links to menus, it can help your group compare venues, get a feel for their style and decide whether you’re looking for a long winery lunch, relaxed pizza, a special celebration meal or seafood by the coast.

Cellar door tastings can require a little more planning when you’re travelling with a group. Some venues are better set up for larger groups than others, and booking requirements can vary. We have a list to help with your planning, developed with input from local cellar door managers, so please let us know if you would like this information.

If you’re looking for something memorable to do together, our Ultimate McLaren Vale Experience Guide covers special tastings, tours and experiences across the region. It’s a useful starting point for discovering experiences you may not have known about and deciding what will suit your group.

Once you’ve booked your stay, you’ll also receive access to our online guest guidebook. This can be shared with everyone staying, giving the group access to practical information about Vale 194, arrival and stay details, local recommendations and useful regional information.

It means the person who organised the trip doesn’t have to become the group help desk. Everyone can access the information they need, while the organiser can get back to enjoying the trip too.

8. Does the Accommodation Suit the Reason for Your Trip?

Not every group getaway looks the same.

A wedding group may need accommodation booked well in advance and space for guests to get ready. A family reunion may need different generations to stay close while maintaining some independence. A group of friends may care most about a central location, king beds and easy access to long lunches and cellar doors.

Vale 194 welcomes groups travelling for weddings and wedding weekends, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, family reunions and multigenerational stays, girls’ weekends, friends’ getaways, golf trips, food and wine weekends, and corporate or team stays.

Thinking about the purpose of your trip before booking can help you choose accommodation that makes the whole weekend easier, not just somewhere for everyone to sleep.

9. How Long Should a Group Stay in McLaren Vale?

For a group getaway, we think three or four nights is a much better starting point than two.

A two-night stay gives you only one full day together. Once everyone has arrived, settled in and caught up, it can feel like you’re packing up again just as the weekend has begun.

With three or four nights, there is time for a long lunch, cellar door visits and a special group experience, while still leaving space for a walk or ride along the Shiraz Trail, a morning at the beach or simply a slow breakfast before everyone heads in different directions for a few hours.

And the ultimate version? Stay for a week.

A week gives you time to explore McLaren Vale properly, enjoy the nearby coast, visit the Willunga Farmers Market, discover more of the Fleurieu Peninsula and still have the occasional afternoon with absolutely nothing planned.

For groups travelling from interstate or overseas, a longer stay also makes the effort of bringing everyone together feel much more worthwhile.

10. What Should We Book Before We Arrive in McLaren Vale?

When you’re travelling as a group, booking ahead is important.

We recommend booking your key meals before you arrive, including both lunches and dinners. Larger groups are much harder for restaurants and winery venues to accommodate at short notice, particularly on weekends and during busy event and wedding periods.

Book your long lunches, dinner reservations, cellar door tastings that require bookings, transport and any special experiences that your group particularly wants to enjoy.

But don’t plan every minute — or feel that everyone has to do the same thing.

Leave time for a morning walk or e-bike ride along the Shiraz Trail, a trip to the beach, an unexpected cellar door recommendation or simply a slow morning together over coffee and breakfast.

You can also plan a night in. Every house at Vale 194 has a full kitchen, dining and living areas and an undercover barbecue, so guests have the freedom to cook, bring home local produce or keep dinner simple after a long lunch.

For groups staying across several houses, this flexibility also means everyone can choose what suits them. Some might head out for dinner, while others stay in and enjoy a relaxed evening at Vale 194.

The best group trips usually have a few wonderful things firmly booked, plenty of room around them to enjoy wherever the day takes you, and the freedom for everyone to enjoy the getaway in their own way.

11. What Makes McLaren Vale Good for a Group Getaway?

McLaren Vale works particularly well for groups because there is enough variety for different interests without needing to travel long distances between experiences.

A weekend can include cellar doors, long lunches, breweries and distilleries, walking or cycling, art and galleries, farmers markets and time on the nearby coast.

The region also changes noticeably with the seasons. Summer brings beach mornings and winery events. Autumn is a favourite time of year for many South Australians, with changing colours across the vines and beautiful days for exploring. Winter is made for red wine, tastings and long lunches, while spring brings fresh growth and more opportunities to dine and explore outdoors.

It means there is no single way to experience McLaren Vale, and plenty of reasons for a group to return.
