In Mid October, the inaugural MICHELIN Guide South Australia 2027 selection will be revealed, the first time an Australian destination has been featured in the world-famous guide. Anonymous MICHELIN Guide inspectors have been visiting restaurants across South Australia, assessing the quality of ingredients, cooking techniques, flavours, personality of the cuisine and consistency.
For McLaren Vale, it’s an exciting moment. Our region is already internationally recognised for wine, but food has long been just as much a part of the McLaren Vale experience. Local produce, growers, chefs, restaurants, wineries and cellar doors are closely connected, creating the strong sense of place that makes eating here so special.
And now we’re wondering, which McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Peninsula restaurants will be included when the Guide is revealed?
Make a Spring stay of it

What do the different MICHELIN distinctions mean?
With all the excitement around the MICHELIN Guide coming to South Australia, I wanted to understand a little more about how it actually works and what the different distinctions mean. I knew about MICHELIN Stars, but I hadn’t realised how many different ways a restaurant can be recognised, or just how rare those Stars are.
After a little research, and with the numbers changing as new MICHELIN Guides are released around the world, here’s what I found.
Being included in the MICHELIN Guide doesn’t necessarily mean receiving a Star. The Guide recognises restaurants across several categories, from exceptional destination dining to great-value local favourites.
One MICHELIN Star recognises high-quality cooking delivered consistently and is considered “worth a stop”.
Two MICHELIN Stars recognise excellent cooking that is refined and inspired and “worth a detour”, while the coveted
Three MICHELIN Stars are reserved for exceptional cuisine considered “worth a special journey”.
There is also the Bib Gourmand, recognising restaurants offering good-quality food at good value, and
MICHELIN Selected, for restaurants inspectors believe deserve a place in the Guide.
A few interesting MICHELIN facts
⭐ Around 3,100–3,200 restaurants worldwide currently hold One MICHELIN Star – recognising high-quality cooking delivered consistently.
⭐⭐ Roughly 525–550 restaurants hold Two MICHELIN Stars – awarded for excellent cooking that is refined and inspired.
⭐⭐⭐ Just over 150–160 restaurants worldwide currently hold Three MICHELIN Stars – MICHELIN’s highest distinction for exceptional cuisine.
🍽️ More than 3,200 restaurants hold a Bib Gourmand – recognising good-quality food at good value.
📖 Tens of thousands of restaurants are MICHELIN Selected – recognised by MICHELIN inspectors for good cooking and worthy of inclusion in the Guide, with the total number of listed addresses approaching 20,000 globally.
So when South Australia’s inaugural MICHELIN Guide selection is announced on 14 October, there will be much more to watch for than Stars alone, and we’ll be particularly interested to see how McLaren Vale and the wider Fleurieu Peninsula are represented.
